Women’s Championship & Its History

This prestigious belt holds so much weight and history. This belt symbolizes the shattered ceilings and the trailblazers who did so much for women’s wrestling. The original WWE Women’s Championship was the first women’s world championship of WWE This belt was introduced on September 18, 1956. As we wrap up Women’s History Month I would love to give flowers to some of the women who carried this belt and did so much for Women’s wrestling.

Jacqueline: The WWE HOF, the well deserved title. Jacqueline is a 2X Women’s Champion. She is the first ever African American woman to not only win the Women’s Championship but the Cruiserweight championship. A history maker and an inspiration to many of the current female wrestlers.

Jazz: She was a force to reckoned with. Started out in ECW and came to the WWF during the Invasion Era and shook redefined what it meant to be a diva. She presented everything it meant to be one: strong, beautiful and resilient. She was the last WWF championship as the company changed the name to WWE. A history maker to say the least as she became the 1st ever black woman to defend & retain the women’s championship at WrestleMania . I have MANY favorite matches of Jazz but WrestleMania 18 is in my top 5.

Chyna AKA The 9th Wonder: a trailblazer during the Attitude Era for women’s wrestling. She shattered so many ceilings proving that women can hang with the men. Her list of achievements include: 1X Women’s Champion, 3X Intercontinental Champion, 1st woman in Royal Rumble, Part of the King of the Ring Tournament and was the only woman to be the #1 contender for the WWF Heavyweight Championship.

Her last match which was her retaining against Lita for the WWF Women’s Championship. As dominant as Chyna was, it was refreshing to see a contender give her a challenge. Lita did a great job holding her own during this match.

Lita: The tomboy who showed a new look of beauty during the Attitude Era.
The red hair, tattoos and the moves were a fresh look to that scene. Her Lucha background had fans at the edge of their seats. Like the many women listed above, she could hang with the men in the ring. This 4X Champion has many good matches, but my favorite was her match against Trish Stratus in 2004. First time women were able to main event on RAW. She ended up winning the belt after this historic match.

Trish Stratus: When you think of this belt, you have to mention the 7X Champion! A trailblazer within her own right. When you talk about a hard worker, you must give Trish Stratus her flowers. She pushed herself to better in the ring by hanging with some of the toughest women to ever grace the ring. She went up against Jazz, Jacqueline and Victoria to name a few. During the era where being eye candy would suffice, she wanted to break that mold and be a wrestler. 2 of my favorite matches of Trish would be WM 19 when she won the belt for the 4th time and her retirement match against Lita Unforgiven 2006.

Molly Holly: 2X Women’s Champion. Her winning effort against Gail Kim for the belt is one of my favorite matches. My second favorite would be her match at WrestleMania 20 against Victoria in a hair vs. title match. This match was solely Molly’s idea as she wanted to ensure the Women’s Championship was featured on the biggest stage. Originally there were no plans for the Women’s belt to be featured. She thought this would be great heat since she was a heel but also great momentum for Victoria. She was absolutely correct because this one of the most memorable matches from that match card.

Ivory: 3X Women’s Champion. Another catalyst during the Attitude Era which is no surprise to here WWE HOF title. She is infamous for her amazing role in Right To Censor. No matter heel or face she was a great in-ring performer. During her 3rd reign my two favorite matches would be the triple threat between her, Molly and Trish and her 7th defense against Jacqueline.

Though there is a very long list of women who carried this belt, this is my top list of who broke barriers for women’s wrestling in the WWF/E. The limitations that were set during that time they still managed to give it their all in the ring and leaving us inspired. It feels amazing to finally purchase this belt and rock the belt I always wanted around my waist. What a great way to end Women’s History Month!
